$-30-89 Aug. 25, the ladies from Little Flower Guild helped the residents of Little Flower Haven roll bandages for the missions. Those who came and helped were Lois Koesters and Josephine Koesters. We thank them. Elva Graeve returned home Sunday after spending a week at Mercy Hospital in Co. Bluffs and undergoing back surgery. ACTIVITIES AT UTTLE FLOWER The following people from Portsmouth came to Little Flower Haven Tuesday and played cards and visited with the residents. Later they all en- joyed rolls and coffee. Everyone had a good time and we thank them for coming. Those who came were Zeno Leinens, Joe Schmitzes, Helen Sternberg, Suzette Langenfeld, Emma Lefeber, Kate Plambeck, Ludwina Rau, Mary Pitsch, Rita Leinen, Rita Ohlinger and Lena Stein. Valeria Erlbacher was sur- prised by members of her fam- ily at a restaurant near Harlan on her 85th birthday. Attending were Richard Koesterses, Norbert Koesterses, Louie Koesterses, Jim Blums, AI Graeves, Owen Heeses, Denny Kohleses, Don Erlbachers, Dick Erlbachers, Bill Erlbachers, Mike Lintons and Jenny of Minneapolis; Terry Kohleses and girls of Omaha; Randy Laver family of Omaha; Jeff Reynoldses and Jill of Omaha; Dave Kohleses and Emilie of Omaha; Bill Heese family of Omaha; Dean Staleys of Omaha; Glen Kohles and Paula Bruck of Omaha Jayne Kohles of Omaha Cathy Kohles of Omaha Julie, Ann and Dan Erlbacher of Omaha; Dave, Shawn and Chad Erlbacher. Thursday, Aggie Gaul, larry Gaul and George Stoltz entertained at Litde Flower Haven. Aggie played the or- an, Larry the guitar and eorge the bass. Aggie also noon and we thank them for coming. Francis Kocsterses visited Wednesday with her brother, Rev. Richard Gubbels, pastor of Our Lady's Immaculate Heart at Ankeny. Group 8 and volunteers of St. Joseph's parish sponsored bingo at Little Flower Haven Aug. 24 and we thank them for coming. Those who came and helped were Betty (Ivo) Gaul, Angela Gaul, Mildred Bruck, Adeline Altman, Bernice Gaul, Sr. Richardine Weeder, Sr. Frances Mary Gocken, Jaclyn Weir, Mildred Gaul, Jane Bissen, Amber Bissen, Amy O'Clair, Annie O'Clair, Auby O'Clair and Marie Goeser. A sing-a-long was held at Little Flower Haven Monday with Mary Wilwerding as pi- anist. Helping sing were Sr. Richardine and Sr. Frances Mary from Earling and Sr. Brendon and Sr. Marlene from Westphalia. We thank them for coming. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Ivo Blums celebrated their birthdays Friday at a cafe in Denison. All the children came to help them celebrate, they were Gene Swansons, Jerry Schwartes, Larry Schwartes, Ken Schwartes, Bob Koppits all of Denison and Rod Summerfields from Dunlap. The rest of the eve was spent playing cards at Gene Swansons. They also re- ceived a birthday call from their son in Denver, CO. Aug. 20, Martin Anthony was baptized at St. Ann Church at Logan during the 10:30 a.m. Mass. He is the son of Damian Grosses of Logan. Becky Umstat and Declan Gross were godparents. After the ceremony a noon lunch was served at Damian Grosses for a host of family and friends. Duane Grosses and Mary Kathleen of Columbus, NE., spent last weekend with Alban Grosses. Sunday, they attended Church in Logan and the re- ception at the Grosses. Saturday, Urb Schneiders of Harlan and Edgar Blums at- tended the graduation of their daughter and daughter-in-law from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Cynthia Schneider gradugted "with highest distinefmn". The Blums and Schneiders returned home Sunday eve after spend- ing the weekend at Dave Schneiders. Dwight Wubbenhorsts vis- ited Sunday afternoon with her sister, Frances Koesters fam- ily. Gerald Bissens went to Greenfield to attend the wake and funeral of their brother-in- law, Charles Flickinger. Also attending the funeral was Bob Bissen, Betty Blevins, Jerry Bissen and Chris Bissen all of Ealring and Tom Heits and boys of Evansdale. Zeno Blums and Darrell Blums visited with their brother and uncle, Cecil Blum at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha, Monday. The community was saddened to hear of the sudden death of Gall Book of Prairie View, KS. He was a brother of Mel Book of Portsmouth and also had other relatives in this area. VISITORS FROM IOWA CITY Dick,Cairneys of Iowa City visited Monday with Bob Cairneys. Doug Cairney of Des Moines visited with his grandparents, Bob Cairneys Tuesday. Ivo Blums of Earling; Jack Kirschbaums and Wilma Lehan all of Defiance spent the weekend at the Polka Festival at the Majestic Ballroom in Cottage Grove, MN. Pete Wilwerding and Richard Wilwerding of Earling and Eugene Wilwerdings of Harlan attended the funeral of their auni and sister at Mount St. Francis Convent at Dubuque Saturday. Sr. Maureen died Aug. 24. She had been a nun for 65 years and had spent her last years at Holy Family Hall for retired sisters at the convent. Many other relatives and friends also attended. Garry Gauls attended the pre-nuptial dinner in Omaha Friday night for Kathy McCarthy and Duane Chamberlain. Garry Gauls, Kathy and Kris attended the wedding of her brother, Duane Chamberlain and Kathy McCarthy at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Omaha Saturday afternoon. Garry and Grace took up offertory gifts at the Mass and Kathy and Kris were in charge of gifts at the recep- tion which was held at Best Western Regency West fol- lowing the ceremony which was preformed by the groom's brother, Fr. Bob Chamberlain of Co. Bluffs. ATTEND 40TH ANNIVERSARY A large crowd of relatives and friends attended the 40th wedding anniversary Mass and open house held Saturday eve honoring Mark Langenfelds of Earling and Joe Habekorns of Long Island, N.Y. Rita Block returned Saturday eve after spending a week in Omaha at her sister and fam- ily, Jack Dempseys. Wednesday afternoon, they along with Jean Laux of Ashland, NE., and Bernie Wilwerding of Earling, went to Keosauqua, to attend the wake and funeral of their aunt, Mrs Herman Kloewer. The fu- neral was held Thursday morn- ing at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington, with burial in the cemetery at Keosauqua. Rita Block was a lector at Mass and Bernie Wilwerding was a Communion minister. Jean Laux and Dee Demsey took up offertory gifts. They returned to Omaha Thursday night. Jim Wilwerdings spent the weekend with Bernie Wilwerding and Tony after be- ing employed at St. Thomas More Center during the sum- mer months. Tuesday he re- turned to classes at SL Paul's Seminary in St. Paul, MN. Bartlett completes Army training Army National Guard Private Bradley W. Bartlett has completed training at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, GA. During the course, students received training which quali- fied them as light-weapons in- fantrymen and as indirect-fire crewmen in a rifle or mortar squad. Instruction included weapons qualifications, tac- tics, patrolling, land mine warfare, field communications and combat operations. VALLEY - DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge is accepting applications for reservations during the 1989 waterfowl hunting season on a portion of the refuge located within the state of Iowa. Hunting on the controlled Iowa unit will run continu- ously from Nov. 1 through the end of the Iowa state goose season and is limited to the taking of ducks, geese and coots only. The DeSoto hunt- ing area will be the same area opened in previous years. Applications for hunting in the Iowa unit will be accepted Sept. 1 through Sept. 30, 1989, and a drawing to deter- mine successful applicants will be held on Monday, Oct. 2, 1989. All applications for reservations must include the applicant's name, address, and telephone number. Applications should include the specific date the applicant wishes to hunt, plus any al- ternate dates the applicant will accept, and a $10.00 reserva- tion fee, payable by check or money order, to the "U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service." Hunters are reminded that each applicant is allowed only one advance reservation and that all applicants must be at least 16 years of age.
