This is another shift in the per- sonel of local business houses, made necessary by the Selective Service program. George Schack is a corporal with the 168th Infantry (Rifle) at Camp Claibourne, LA. The Moews-Lowe quintet, Southwest Iowa A.A.U. champion defeated Schaller 65 to 52 at Schaller Monday evening. Ickes was high man in the Schaller game with 19 points. Cyclone track men have been issued equipment but the weather has hampered outdoor practice. Only a few of the veterans are working out regularly in the gymna- sium. Clyde Gray, a junior is back as is Hoyt Tague. Next con- test will be Friday evening, 8 p.m. at Jim's Market in Har- lan for the annual carcass show. Earling - County Legion Posts have elected Jack Slaven, Portsmouth, County Baseball Commissioner for 1969 at a regular meeting here March 6. Slaven will arrange all scheduling for the county's Cub, Midget and PeeWee baseball teams this year. George F. Phelps re- calved a Master of Science degree from Iowa State Uni- versity, Ames, Iowa, March 1. Phelps, former Harlan teacher and salesmanager of Squealer Feed is Zone Man- ager of Investors Diversified in Wayne, Nab. 10 YEARS AGO March 15, 1979 Harlan's Liquor Store has been designated "Store-of- the-Month by state officials. Ed Briggs of New Market, district store manager No. 4 of Des Moines, was in town on Monday this week to pre- sent the award to Harlan store manager Lois (Mrs Gus) Eckermann. Other employees at the Harlan store are Tony Wageman, Lily Anastasi, Neoma Heidenreich and Doris Knaggs. Maryviile, Mo. - A pair of Harlan prepsters, Mike Rust and Phil Langenfeld, won weight championships in the annual Northwest Mis- souri State University inter- mural wrestling tournament here.
