A picture adds very much to the story.) Billie G. Nelson, 57 MANNING - Billie, son of Oliver and Bernice Olsen Nelson, was born Aug. 5, 1931 at Harlan. He graduated from Haflan High School in 1949. In 1952 he entered the U.S. Army. After returning home from basic training he was marded to Marilyn Popp, Jan. 21, 1953 at the Popp fam/ly home south of Manning. After their marriage he spent the next 19 months in Korea. When he returned from the service they farmed for a short time after which he worked for the Manning Creamery Company for many years and later for Blue Bunny. He then worked for Pacific Adhesives and Rural Water before his most recent position as Water and Waste Water Superintendent for the City of Manning. He was a member of Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517 where he was Past Commander of both. In addition he was a Past Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Iowa District 6. He also served 18 years as a member of the Manning Fire Dept. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Manning, Jan. 29, 1989 at age 57 years, 5 months and 24 days. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Manning; sons, David of Manning; Todd of Sioux City and Scott of Iowa City; daughters, Jane Nelson of Wall Lake; Sara (Mrs Rick) Beam of Manilla; and Barbara (Mrs Chuck) Ramsey of Manning; six grandchildren; a sister, Jerrie (Mrs James) Savery of Carroll; a, Larry Popp and wife, Kathy of Albany, OR; niece, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were Feb. 1, 1989 at Ohde Funeral Home, Manning with Pastor Hank Jensen, Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial in Manning City cemetery with casket bearers Marvin Bmch, Allen Muhlbauer, Duane Otto, Ken Jensen, Chuck Moore and Gary Eischeid. Military honors by Emil Eweldt Post 22 of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517, Manning. J. Earl Anderson, 98 HARLAN - J. Earl Anderson, son of Rasmus and Anna (Olson) Anderson, was born July 16, 1890 in Kirkman. He died at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Feb. 2, 1989, at age 98 years, six months and 17 days. He grew to adulthood on his parents farm, attending country school. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Irwin, but joined the Methodist Church at Kirkman in ]917. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan. During WW I, he served his country in the U.S. Army. May 20, 1918, he married Bernice Adelaide Slates in Minneapolis, MN. Two daughters were born to this union. After their marriage, they farmed southeast of Kirkman until 1945 when they moved to their home at 1220 College Blvd. For several years, he continued an active interest in agriculture and soil conservation. Other activities that provided an interest to him were the Shelby County Historical Society, Garden Club and senior citizens action center. After the death of his wife in 1974, he continued to make Is home on College Blvd. until 1978 when he moved to Westridge Apartments. He became a resident of Baptist Memorial Home in Nov. of 1987 and this has been his home since that time. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Jennie, Alvah, Eunice and Leta; and two brothers, Lynn and Marion. He is survived by two daughters, Ru Ann (Mrs J. Tom) Stewart of Honolulu, HI and Ramona (Mrs Wayne) Barkman of Hot Springs, AR; one sister, Hazel (Mrs Charles) Buckman of Chula VIsta, CA; two granddaughter and one grandson, five great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were held Feb. 6, 1989 at Pauley Funeral Home with Pastor George Gibson of First United Methodist Church in Harlan officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery, Kirkman with Win. Weber, Simond Mathiasen, wilmer E. Petersen and Edward U. Christiansen serving as honorary casket bearers. Casket bearers were Fred Louis, Vic Morgan, Archie Petersen, Madow Clemons, H. JERRY AND SYLVIA EARLING Lena (Myrtle) Johns, AVOCA - Lena (Myrtle) Johnson was born west She was the daughter of Peter and Patrea Nelsen Poulsen. five children in  family. She attended school in Walnut. Johnson March 16, ]931 in the English Lutheran Church made their home on a farm north of Avoca. They were son, Frederick. She was a Charier member of  English and was presently a member of the Trinity Lutheran ChurC retired and moved to Avoca in 1974. She died at the Salem Lutheran Nursir Home in Elk at age 83. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son sisters, Mildred Andersen and Hattie Harding and one Poulsen. She is survived by her husban(J, Harry and one sister, Bernice Hanson of Elk Horn; nieces, tires. Services were held Jan. 27, 1989 at Trinity Pastor Dean sudman and Rev. Duane King in Avoca cemetery with Lowell Andersen, Richard Sievers, ' Howard Bangston, Charles Allen and Mark Bornholdt bearers. Berthusen-Knutson Funeral Home was in charge of Cecil M. Thiles, 87 Woodbine - Cecil Marie Kohl was born at Harlan to William Henry and Grace Adelia (James) Kohl Feb. 7, 1901. She died Jan. 27, 1989 at Corn. munity Memorial Hospital in Missoud Valley, at age 87 years, 11 months and 20 days. She graduated from public school at Panama and attended Boyles Business College in Omaha. She was a telephone operator at Panama where her father managed the phone company. She married Edward WIlliams Thiles Aug. 20, 1919 and from this union 8 children were born. She was a homemaker the remainder of her life until she entered Rose VIsta Home with her husband last February. She was an active member of the Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary and the Women's Relief Corp. She was preceded in death by a son, Darrell, in 1952 and a daughter, Helen L. Weber, 65 AUDUBON - Helen Luc/lle Weber, daughter of Julius (Jensen) Andersen was born on a farm near Audubon, died at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Jan. 65 years, three months and seven days. graduated from Audubon High School in 1942, where of her class. While still in high school, she received after school she began teaching rural school. June 1, 1944, she married James Weber at the home They were the parents of two children.
